saysthemagpiehi i promise i did some actual writing today but also i spent an hour texting hannah a long description of an XTREME SLOW BURN narry fic where narry are teen dads together but there is lots of PINING and it takes them YEARS to actually get together!!! OK FIRST HAVE SOME TEEN DAD NARRY VISUALS.

TEEN DADS NARRY!!!!!! probably harry and niall were just ~hanging out when it happened. maybe they went to different schools but had some of the same friends and hung out at the mall food court on weekends together lol. so they were sort of peripherally Aware of each other for a year or two (why not just extend this slow burn even further??) and then later started seeing each other at mutual friends' parties on weekends and maybe watched movies in niall's mom's basement together etc etc, horrible awkward teenage things. the one and only time they have sex in high school is a complete disaster. harry's slept with an ex-girlfriend before but niall's a virgin and it's VERY AWKWARD and neither of them have any idea what they're doing and niall has a moment where he thinks he... sort of messed up the condom thing, maybe, possibly, but he's too embarrassed to say anything bc he thinks harry is very worldly and is a sex expert and probably he's made such an idiot of himself already!!! (harry is NOT SUAVE btw, he is also TERRIBLY NERVOUS and awkward and has no idea what he's doing, but niall seems to think he's some sort of expert and is sort of awed by harry's sexual know-how so harry's trying to keep up the facade!!) anyway it is not a huge success and afterwards niall's so embarrassed that he makes up some excuse for why he has to leave immediately. harry interprets his reaction as like, niall did not enjoy it and does not want to do it again, which is reinforced by the fact that their text conversations after are super awkward and stilted, and niall is weirdly acting as if they're just like, bros being bros!! hahaha!!! and harry is like oh. ok. in typical narry fashion they do not talk about it at all and sort of drift apart.
THEN HARRY FINDS OUT HE'S PREGNANT!!!! takes a bunch of tests on his own one afternoon while his mother and sister are out shopping and they're all positive, but he doesn't tell anyone for a couple more weeks, just keeps it secret because he doesn't know what to do or what he wants to do. he's sort of a mess, crying all the time, getting awful morning sickness, being weepy and tragic about everything. possibly he sends niall a text that's just like hi, half hoping that niall is just going to be able to intuit exactly what's wrong from his text, but of course niall doesn't. they have an awkward text exchange, just more stilted small talk, and harry ends up feeling worse than before. probably he spends the whole night stalking niall's instagram/twitter and convincing himself niall's dating some girl who's in a lot of his pictures. he fixates on that for a while bc it's easier than thinking about being pregnant, but then at school louis's talking to someone about his mum being a midwife and says something about people needing checkups when they're pregnant, and harry panics a little because what if he's hurt the baby by not going to the doctor!!!
anyway in this fic i think harry works somewhere with nick, like maybe he's charmed his way into an internship at the very small local radio station, which mostly just mean of him bringing people their coffee and gets paid in free CDs. nick works there and is sort of just an older mentor/work friend, he's very fond of harry and treats him like his kid brother. at work one weekend harry gets VERY upset about something very small, and then he starts crying and nick's like whoa are you all right, did something happen at school. and harry tearfully confesses that he's PREGNANT and he doesn't know what to do!!!!! nick panics, because he does NOT feel grown up enough to handle this situation, and has to call aimee or alexa or someone for advice. maybe one of them is a nurse or something, and there's a scene where nick sits there awkwardly listening while harry has a very tearful conversation on the phone with nick's friend about what his options are. and then when harry hangs up he's like i think i want to tell my mum, and nick's internally like thank GOD, ok yes, that's probably best, best to have a real adult deal with this!!!
then nick drives harry home and harry asks him to stay while he tells anne. except anne misunderstands and thinks nick's there because he's the father and she's very tight-lipped but obviously upset, and harry misinterprets her being upset as her being angry with him and then he gets upset. nick slowly realizes what's happening and asks to have a word with her in the kitchen, and is just like no no you've got it all wrong, he just came to me upset and i didn't know what to do, i just panicked, he hasn't told me who the father is, etc etc. and just making it clear that he would never ever ever take advantage of harry's crush on him/the fact that harry thinks nick hung the moon. and anne softens CONSIDERABLY. also now nick's like, in her good books forever bc he's been a good older mentor figure and taken care of her son when he was upset and scared!! nick's a v good human!!!! (IDK i'm just craving good gryles friendship fic that explores what their age gap would mean for their friendship. i just want nick being a good egg who understands that harry's very young and that even though nick might not feel very grown up, he's the responsible adult. all the horrible news stories lately are just revealing that soooo many dudes abuse their influence at every opportunity!!! i want protective good role model nick!!!!)
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT???? WHO KNOWS!!! but it's definitely teen dad narry, somehow harry tells niall. then it's them establishing a sort of tentative closer friendship while harry's pregnant. but they're not hooking up and (in classic narry avoidance style!!) they're also not talking about the fact that uh, they had sex and that's why harry's pregnant now!! it's just like they've both assumed that the other one doesn't want it to be a thing, and maybe they have this ONE time during harry's pregnancy where they kiss and sort of fool around a little but then they never talk about that either!!! maybe their friendship feels sort of fragile and new and both of them are scared to bring it up.
LIKE WHAT IF it's just an intense slow burn fic where they spend years not talking about it!!! it turns out they're actually pretty good at co-parenting. they don't live together niall spends a lot of time at harry's mom's place. he learns to drive and gets a job and saves up for a car so he can take harry and the baby to their doctor's appointments (and also to the park and the zoo and museums, bc harry wants their baby to experience NATURE and CULTURE!!). they both have feelings for each other but just never act on them bc they both think that ship has sort of sailed (even though there are a lot of moments where it feels like maybe it hasn't totally!!). anyway then maybe when their daughter's a year old harry gets asked out by someone at a coffee shop or something. and he sort of.. mentions it to niall, to gauge his reaction, and niall's determined to be supportive bc harry should have a life, what did he expect, that harry would just be happy parenting forever and never want to date anyone again? so he's like WOW that sounds great you should definitely go i'll watch the baby etc etc. which harry interprets as further proof that niall's really not interested in anything more with him.
anyway you could really draw this slow burn angst out for ages!!!!! it could be narry pining for each other for like five or six YEARS before anything happens, and harry dating lots of people in that time and niall just gritting his teeth and being determinedly supportive, and telling everyone in his life that he's just happiest being single, he really just wants to focus on being a dad. OBVIOUSLY there would be lots of little classic slow burn moments where it really feels like they're almost getting there, and then one or the other draws back or something interrupts it and then they go for ages again just silently pining!!!!
everyone harry dates is just somehow not good enough or not right, he can't figure out why. maybe nick's like, the baby's godfather or something and anne's practically adopted him into the family, and now that harry's older and he and nick are more actual friends instead of awkward nick-trying-to-be-a-good-responsible-adult friends, harry spends a lot of time angsting to nick about why nobody's ever good enough and describing all the things he wants in a partner. and nick's like hmm wow well can't think of anybody in your life who fits that description... but harry's in DENIAL bc he thinks niall's not interested. also niall keeps going on and on about how happy he is being single to anyone who'll listen. single suits him right down to the ground, he keeps saying, so harry's like, what's the point even!!! niall doesn't want to date anyone and he definitely doesn't want to date harry, because if he did surely he would've said something by now.

I love excellent co parents narry? Because they'd totally be the most selfless parents, and that selflessness just gets worse over time, like Niall starts to just completely forget himself, like he kind of thinks, Ok, this is the hand I was dealt, if all I am for the next 18 years is the person who aids Harry in this then that's who I am. Like he feels repentant for a long time and that includes forgetting or trying to forget how shit it feels to think of Harry with someone else. Like he gets a lot of lectures from his own brain and other people about how he's just kind of fixated on Harry because they shared this moment when Niall was so young and impressionable, and if he'd let himself date other people he'd realise Harry isn't the be all and end all. But then sometimes Niall looks at their kid, and he just thinks, I'll never love anyone else other than Harry because he can't imagine being with someone who hasn't shared every moment of their kid's life with him? How can he look over at his partner and that person be someone who doesn't know about the special way the baby needed to be held to fall asleep and who doesn't know about the time Niall cried because the baby smiled at him. And they're not just co parents like, Niall knows about when Harry has a big meeting and texts him about it after to check how it went, and Harry visits Bobby and their lives are just intertwined.
